You are a Parent to Yourself

The prefrontal cortex does not fully develop until well into adulthood.

The limbic system typically develops at the time of adolescence.

The purpose of developing a prefrontal cortex is to have the ability to generate behavioral strategies. This region of the brain develops well into adulthood. This lines up roughly to when parents and family will start being unavailable to guide behavior.

The limbic system develops quickly much to the grief of parents. The possible moodiness may have a positive effect of causing the teenager to experience the world, make mistakes (hopefully not too much), and create an internal map of the world.

In this way we can see that the prefrontal cortex takes on the role of the adult in the prefrontal-limbic system relationship. Your intuition is the soil of your thoughts and actions. Perhaps it is important not to neglect that part of yourself?

Remember: The devouring mother stunts the growth of her children. Overprotected, they learn nothing of the world. The tyrant father who punishes, controls, and withholds love raises a child without self-worth or drive. The clever parent is one who recognizes and rewards the valuable efforts of their children (no matter how small), treats them of value, tailor their environments, place them with good influences, gently pushes their child forward, and makes careful and rare use of punishment. These are the children who are capable and achieve. To anyone that will listen, be a good parent unto yourself.
